Drug Channels News Roundup: July 2012

Happy 236th birthday, America! After a week in which many of us became amateur constitutional scholars, stay cool and enjoy these noteworthy news stories from the Drug Channels universe.
  • Meet Mr. Wasson—A humanizing profile of Walgreen’s CEO
  • Meet Mr. Barrett—A humanizing profile of Cardinal Health’s CEO
  • Meet Some Criminals—A behind-the-scenes of a Florida pill mill
Plus, Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, DFA, provides FDA-mandated laughs on side effects labeling.

Walgreen's Wasson unafraid of risky moves
Here’s a a very interesting profile of Greg Wasson, President and CEO or Walgreen (NYSE: WAG). There is a lot of personal information about his family, work habits, and work/life philosophy. It’s worthwhile reading to better understand the man behind the role.

Prescription for Success
And here’s another corporate profile with many personal details about George Barrett, CEO of Cardinal Health (NYSE:CEO). Did you know that he’s a true music man—an accomplished pianist, guitarist, and French-horn player who almost pursued a career in music, but instead landed in the far more glamorous world of drug distribution?

American Pain: The Largest U.S. Pill Mill's Rise and Fall
I enjoyed this rags-to-riches-to-jail story of twin brothers who founded Florida's largest pill mill, I mean, “pain clinic.” In a two year period, the brothers allegedly sold 20 million oxycodone pills and brought in $40 million. It’s a peek inside a seedy world where doctors got paid $75 to $100 for every opioid prescription they wrote. Often, doctors wrote 100 scripts daily. Well worth reading.

Side Effects
Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, DFA, reviews the side effects of Prescott Pharmaceutical products. "Just because a drug is approved by the FDA doesn't mean it's safe, which is why none of Prescott's products are approved by the FDA." Click here if you can't see the video.

Have a great Fourth of July!
