Insider Tips to Help Meet Patient Management Standards in URAC’s Specialty Pharmacy v3.0 Accreditation

Accreditation has become an important step for specialty pharmacies to stay competitive and earn contracts with big pharma and payers. The accreditation process itself helps specialty pharmacies improve their processes to meet the demands of today’s value-based reimbursement environment. But accreditation is not an easy process to go through. Preparing in advance can help specialty pharmacies avoid potential major hurdles.
Considerable changes were made to the patient management standards when URAC released Specialty Pharmacy v3.0 Accreditation in 2015. All specialty pharmacies applying for accreditation should understand these changes, including those preparing for reaccreditation.
To help specialty pharmacies understand the patient management standards changes, and to provide tips to prepare, Therigy and Cleveland Clinic will co-host an educational webinar on Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. EDT.
THE NEW CHALLENGES OF 3.0
While some areas of URAC Specialty Pharmacy v3.0 requirements remain untouched since the last version, a number of areas have seen significant changes. (See URAC's Standards & Measures at a Glance) This is particularly true for the patient management standards, where several standards have been edited, added, and deleted, in addition to undergoing name, number, and weighting changes.
The documentation standards may be especially cumbersome for some pharmacies. Specialty pharmacies are required to document comprehensive patient management overviews in their policies and procedures, including details about adherence evaluation and the effectiveness of therapies and drugs. Overviews for patients who take specialty drugs need to include assessments, reassessments, education, and opt-outs—all of which need to be reviewed by a clinician, even if performed by non-clinical staff.
USING TECHNOLOGY TO FILL THE GAPS
With such strict requirements for management and documentation, it’s non-negotiable for pharmacies to have a consistent and reliable system in place. While URAC does accept its rigorous requirements in the form of paper trails from manual and legacy systems, more specialty pharmacies are turning to advanced technology partners to help digitize and systematize their operations and make sure nothing falls between the cracks.
The right platform can integrate with existing systems, offering key help in areas like patient management, patient safety, specialty drug management, and drug utilization management.
